Santiago de Compostela

Santiago de Compostela is the capital of Galicia and a World Heritage City. It is the final destination of the ancient pilgrimage route, the Way of St. James. The magnificent legacy of its centuries-old history can be appreciated in the layout of the city in which elements from its medieval Christian heritage blend in with Baroque buildings and monuments. At the heart of Santiago, in the Obradoiro Square, lies the Parador, where the guest will not only be assured of a warm welcome but will have the opportunity to sample Galicia's fine traditional gastronomy at its best. The traditions of the region are at their height during the Festival of St. James the Apostle, which is an international tourist attraction.
Santiago today has a population of almost 100,000. Its extensive green zones total 1.3 million square metres. Lying at the geographical centre of Galicia, it is very well connected by road, rail and air. It is only 35 kilometres from the sea and enjoys the privilege of having easy access to both the Rías Altas and Rías Bajas on its north and west coasts respectively. Travelling by road on the Atlantic Highway, Santiago is 40 minutes away from La Corunna and El Ferrol, 30 minutes from Pontevedra, 50 from Vigo and one hour from Orense and Lugo. It has an Atlantic-type climate without extremes of temperature.
